Brentford 3-0 Chelsea, Bayern 7-0: Friday's Two Blowouts
Friday night produced two three-or-more-goal margins in two different countries, and they broke in opposite directions. In London, the bigger away name lost 3-0. In Munich, the bigger home name won 7-0. For anyone filling out a pick’em card this weekend, those two scorelines are the same lesson told twice.
Brentford 3-0 Chelsea, and Brentford go third
Brentford beat Chelsea 3-0 in Premier League Matchday 5, with goals from Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fábio Carvalho. The full-time result is confirmed in our own match data, and the match accounts are at Sky Sports and Click2Houston.
The win lifted Brentford to third after the Friday fixture, with the rest of the matchday still to come.
Three goals from three different scorers is worth noting on its own. A 3-0 built by one player on a hot night is a fluke you can shrug at. A 3-0 built by three is a team that found more than one route to the same outcome — and that is a harder thing to dismiss when you fill in the next card.
Bayern 7-0 Union Berlin, and Kane’s 100 in 98
At the Allianz Arena the favourite did exactly what it was supposed to do, and then kept going: Bayern Munich 7-0 Union Berlin in Bundesliga Matchday 4. Musiala opened at 18’, Harry Kane scored at 39’ and 54’, Michael Olise took 43’, 73’ and 76’, and Saibari added the seventh at 70’. Alphonso Davies supplied two assists.
The underlying numbers were just as one-sided: 67.7% possession and 23 shots to 3, with 15 on target against 2. Reports at ESPN, Sky Sports and Bavarian Football Works carry the detail.
Two records came out of it. Kane reached 100 Bundesliga goals in 98 games — the fastest anyone has done it. And it was Olise’s first hat-trick for Bayern.
Why a 7-0 and a 3-0 teach the same thing
Here is the part that matters for a pool, and it is not “always pick the smaller club”.
In a winner-only pool, the 7-0 and a 1-0 are worth exactly the same. Everyone who wrote “Bayern” collected, whether they pictured a comfortable evening or a demolition. The six extra goals were spectacular and completely irrelevant to the table.
In an exact-score pool, the same match is a wipeout in the other direction. Almost nobody writes 7-0. The people who got the direction right still scored nothing, because they were asked a question — what will the scoreline be — that is far harder than the one they actually answered.
Brentford-Chelsea puts the same tension on the other side of the ledger. The winner was the surprise. The margin, once you accept the winner, was the second surprise. Two separate calls, two separate ways to be wrong.
That is why the format matters more than any single fixture. Our exact-score scoring guide lays out the trade-offs, and distance scoring covers the middle path, where being close to the scoreline still earns something instead of nothing. Pick one before kickoff. Changing it after a 7-0 is how groups fall out.
The rest of Matchday 5
Nine Premier League fixtures remain. Times are BST, with Eastern equivalents, taken from our own schedule data.
Saturday
| BST | ET | Fixture |
|---|---|---|
| 12:30 | 7:30 AM | Tottenham vs Aston Villa |
| 15:00 | 10:00 AM | Newcastle vs Hull |
| 15:00 | 10:00 AM | Everton vs Ipswich |
| 15:00 | 10:00 AM | Brighton vs Arsenal |
| 17:30 | 12:30 PM | Nottingham Forest vs Coventry |
Sunday
| BST | ET | Fixture |
|---|---|---|
| 14:00 | 9:00 AM | Bournemouth vs Liverpool |
| 14:00 | 9:00 AM | Leeds vs Crystal Palace |
| 14:00 | 9:00 AM | Manchester City vs Sunderland |
| 16:30 | 11:30 AM | Fulham vs Manchester United |
Three fixtures kick off in the same 15:00 BST window on Saturday and three more at 14:00 BST on Sunday. Those two blocks are where most of the separation in a Matchday 5 pool is going to come from, and they are also the ones people tend to fill in fastest.
One scheduling note that is easy to miss: this is the last full Premier League round before the international break. The league does not return until 10 October. If your group has been meaning to fix its scoring rules, you are about to get three weeks in which nothing is at stake.
Lock each fixture, not the whole card
Friday already closed. Saturday has not. If your pool locked all ten fixtures before Brentford-Chelsea kicked off, anyone who was busy on Friday evening lost the entire matchday over one deadline.
Per-fixture locks fix that without making the organiser do anything extra: each pick closes a set number of minutes before its own kickoff, started matches stay closed, and everything later stays open. The full argument, including the cases where a single weekly deadline is genuinely simpler, is in when should pick’em picks lock.
