When Does the 2026-27 Football Season Start? Pool Calendar
The summer tournament is over and the trophy’s been handed out, so the question in every group chat is the same: when does the club season actually start again? Good news — you don’t have much of a break. Domestic football is already back, and every big European league is rolling before the end of August. Here’s the calendar to plan your prediction pools around, so your group isn’t scrambling to set one up the night before kickoff.
Correction, August 12. Until that day this page said the Premier League was “the first of the big European leagues back”, and that LaLiga’s and Serie A’s opening dates “hadn’t been locked in by an official source”. Both statements were wrong and we corrected them. When we published on July 21 neither league had put out its fixture list, so we said so rather than repeat a date we couldn’t source. Since then both published — and the answer changed the order: LaLiga opens on August 15, six days before the Premier League.
Correction, August 17. This page also said the Serie A season “opens with Torino v AC Milan”, citing a club article from June 5. We’ve taken that claim down. The August fixture grid puts Torino–Milan on Sunday, August 23, not on the opening day — and the matches we found listed for Saturday the 22nd come from a single source, which isn’t enough for us to name a replacement opener. So the page now says what we can stand behind: Matchday 1 is played across August 22-23, with no named curtain-raiser. This is the third time a club’s June announcement has read like a fixture list here; we’re treating June club posts as unusable for grids from now on.
Liga MX is already back — every single week
If you follow Mexican football, the wait is over. Liga MX is in its Apertura 2026 season right now, and it plays every week from here through December. That’s the underrated thing about Liga MX for a prediction pool: while much of Europe is still finding its feet, you already have weekly fixtures to call. If your group wants to keep the pool warm, this is where you start.
LaLiga: Saturday, August 15 — but Matchday 1 lasts thirteen days
The first big European league back was the Spanish one. LaLiga EA Sports 2026-27 opened on Saturday, August 15, with Alavés–Getafe at 19:30 CEST.
There’s a catch that matters more to whoever runs the pool than to anyone watching. Matchday 1 is not a weekend — it’s thirteen days. LaLiga’s own fixture announcement puts the round between Saturday, August 15 and Thursday, August 27, closing with Barcelona–Athletic (LALIGA — first matchday kick-off times).
For a pool, that’s the difference between a round that closes cleanly on Sunday night and one that sits half-finished for almost two weeks while your group asks in the chat whether it counts yet. Decide up front whether Matchday 1 scores when the last game is played or whether you split it — and tell everyone before they make their picks, not after.
The Community Shield: Arsenal 3-0 Manchester City
England’s curtain-raiser is done. Arsenal beat Manchester City 3-0 on Sunday, August 16 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff rather than Wembley — sources on all three sides agree (The FA · Arsenal · Manchester City).
Here’s the number worth keeping: Calafiori scored after 24 seconds. Havertz added the second on 28 minutes and Ødegaard, named man of the match, made it three three minutes after the break. It’s Arsenal’s second Community Shield in three years (The FA).
And that 24 seconds is a pool lesson, not trivia. Every group has someone who says “I’ll send my picks when it kicks off.” In this match, the person who was still typing at the whistle had already lost a line. Premier League and Ligue 1: both on Friday, August 21
Two big leagues open on the same day, which is new information for anyone planning around a single weekend.

Serie A: Matchday 1 across August 22-23 — and it finishes on a Monday
Italy closes out the run of openers. Serie A 2026-27 begins across the weekend of August 22-23, per the league itself (Lega Serie A, which describes it as “the weekend of 22-23 August”).
One more wrinkle for whoever’s scoring: Matchday 1 isn’t confined to that weekend — it closes on Monday, August 24 (beIN Sports, single source, so we’re attributing it rather than stating it flat).
Bundesliga: Friday, August 28
Germany is last in, and it’s the clean one: the Bundesliga 2026-27 season starts Friday, August 28. By then every other major league is already a matchday or two deep, which is usually when a group realises it’s tracking four competitions in three different places.

The trap nobody plans for: “we close picks on Sunday”
Look at that table as a pool organiser rather than a fan, and one thing jumps out. Two of these leagues open on a Friday, and two of them have a Matchday 1 that doesn’t end on a Sunday.
If your group’s rule is “picks close Sunday” — and for most groups it is, because that’s how a normal weekend works — then in the space of two weeks you will lose lines in at least three competitions. If your group closes picks “on Sunday”, you’ve already dropped two matchdays before September. LaLiga’s round runs to a Thursday. Serie A’s runs to a Monday. Ligue 1 and the Premier League will already have kicked off on Friday night.
The fix isn’t complicated, and it’s the same one every time: close per match, not per weekend. A per-match deadline is the only rule that doesn’t require anyone to know which competition’s calendar is weird this week.
Leagues Cup bridges the gap: August 4 – September 6
If you don’t want to wait at all, the Leagues Cup runs from August 4 to September 6, with clubs from Liga MX and MLS facing off in cross-border fixtures. It’s an easy mid-summer pool to run — short, punchy, and it overlaps neatly with the European kickoffs, so you can roll straight from one into the next.
